Assignment from the Washington Post, Great Falls, Montana, April 2024 - Thomas Bogle was logging dozens of miles on the spruce- and pine-lined backcountry trails that weaved around his home in Steamboat Springs, Colo., as he trained for an ultramarathon. His mind wasn’t focused on his target pace, though. Instead, he couldn’t stop thinking about the micro bits of plastic and rubber the soles of his shoes were shedding on the forest floor.

Cliven Bundy, the notorious rancher from Nevada who’s livestock grazing permit fees he’s never paid and who was part of the take over of the Malheur Wildlife area in Oregon, appears here preaching to fans in Superior, Montana, after a judge announced a mistrial and dissmissed charges in the government’s case against him. Others in attendance were Montana State Representative Jennifer Fielder, an anti-government Bundy sympathiser, Ammon Bundy, Cliven’s son, and Cliven’s wife Carol.
